Come wander through our greenhouses! You’ll find perennials, annuals, hanging baskets, floor baskets, and vegetables. You’ll find price signs throughout the greenhouses. If you’re newly arrived in Polson, one of our plant professionals will be glad to be of assistance to you with your choices and ideas. If you’ve lived here for some years, they’ll be glad to help you whenever you come in. Who are those plant professionals? Brenda, Laura, Lisa, and Olga. And myself.
Our plant professionals are dedicated in keeping your future perennials and annuals looking good. When they’re not with you discussing your ideas, they’re watering. They’re removing dead leaves and blossoms, or cutting them back as necessary. That’s how we keep them fresh, rather than just relying on an occasional watering. That’s how our perennials stay fresh in your garden, day after day, year after year. You’ll find that there are cheaper places to buy flowers, but those places don’t provide the attention that we do. We do bedding plants the old fashioned way, we grow them.
Growing zones? Are they of interest to you? You bet! All of our perennials are grown for our growing zone. For most of Lake County and the surrounding areas, the USDA growing zones range from 4A to 5A. Please come in and talk with us as we are familiar with many of the area’s micro climates. If you’re not familiar with growing zones, stop in and talk with one of our plant professionals.
Some of the frequently asked questions are:
• What is the difference between annuals and perennials?
• When in the spring can plants be safely planted outdoors?
If you’re not sure about the answers, come in and talk with one of our plant professionals.
You’ve probably admired and enjoyed the large flower baskets hanging from the light poles in downtown Polson. They’re a creation of our plant professionals in the greenhouses. Our professionals start them early, in February. That way, they’re fully grown when the Chamber of Commerce puts them up in time for Memorial Day weekend.
Do the annuals disappear quickly from our greenhouses? Come in early for the best selections. Remember, they’re regularly cared for with tender, loving hands. We don’t ignore them until someone complains. You won’t find mass watering systems except in particular areas. Even with those systems, our plant professionals check the hundreds of pots on a regular basis to be sure the annuals and perennials aren’t drying out. We want your perennials to last from year to year, and your annuals to last the entire season. We water and feed them regularly.
A small touch: we have customer carry-out boxes made for us, so it’s easy for you to get your collection of pots and flowers home. You may have seen signs just as you come in the front door, asking that sick plants and flowers not be brought inside. That’s for your protection, and ours, as well. If a virus or bug gets in one of the greenhouses, that means lots of work and plants destroyed. The problem must be cleared up so that the plants you take home are healthy, and won’t contaminate your garden.
During the spring preparation period, inside each greenhouse we have floor trays with Greenshield® for our employees to wet the soles of their shoes. That way, we cut down on the possibility of a virus or fungus coming in from the outside. We also check each incoming batch of annuals, perennials, and plants to be sure they have no obvious insects or diseases. We want the plants and flowers you take home to be of the best possible quality. We’re not content to simply put those plants and flowers on our tables without attention to all these details.
